Ocular Malignancies - Retinoblastoma

Ocular malignancies, including retinoblastoma and inherited retinal disorders, such as retinitis pigmentosa, are at the forefront of retinal and genetic research.

  • Retinoblastoma is a type of cancer that forms in the retina, generally in children younger than 5 years old. It may be inherited from a parent. Retinoblastoma can be life-threatening, but in most cases with early diagnoses and treatment eyesight can be saved.
  • Retinitis pigmentosa is caused by a number of genetic defects in which retinal cone cells are damaged. The disease first manifests as dark lines in the retina.
